The latest drama in the pet food world concerns grain free diets. The reason I mention peas is because as pet food makers turned away from corn, wheat & soy (still readily available by the way!) they turned to peas, lentils, chick peas etc. There is a LOT of press circulating that Grain free foods are terrible for your pets. They are labeled by “Big Pet food” as boutique, exotic….This post isn’t about the evils of corn wheat and soy…I’ve already covered that topic for the past 20 years. This post is about the piling on, by the misinformed, veterinarians, breeders, pet owners, trainers, dog food manufacturers, etc. that “grain free is bad” & possibly contributes to heart disease.
To date the best article about this topic is by Dr. Chris Bessent DVM, founder and creator of Herbsmith Inc. and The Simple Food project. I urge you to follow the link . It’s not very long, but it hits the nail on the head of this topic. Before you consider changing to a “grain” diet, which I strongly urge you NOT to do…read the article.
The Bark Market’s belief that species appropriate diets, quality and variety, are the key to optimal health and wellness, are questioned/challenged often. This is more of the same and we are undeterred. We remain committed to our brands and to kibble, raw, freeze dried raw and canned. We continue to educate pet parents, who ask, and support them in their journey and in the decisions they make for their pets.
